Will stared from the second story window of his office at the slumbering gardens below. At his back sat Gracie, pencil scratching through the trigonometry problems he’d assigned her. He knew if he turned he’d see her long blond bangs dripping into her eyes and her tongue caught between her teeth.
The freezing wind gusted against the trees, rattling the icicles. He shivered but not from cold. For weeks since Evangeline had Called to him, he’d been shaking with need. His friends solemnly continued to inform him that he could not battle this phenomenon—it bordered on madness. Well, maybe that’s what he was—crazy. Crazy to have Made her immortal when she’d obviously chosen to die and crazy to believe he’d be able to walk out of her life.
He’d been bombarded with Vision upon Vision of her. Full lips of the palest pink were his torment. The drip of violet hair into one blue eye haunted him. And the memory of pouring his immortal blood into her needy veins maddened him. He couldn’t even bear to think of her hot little body.
The previous night when she’d spoken his name aloud and burrowed into his brain, he realized he needed to put a stop to it. He didn’t want this intimate link with Evangeline Mayer, druggie and party-girl. But what really made him deny their bond was her lack of moral fiber. He’d seen her in action at the club, pressuring a younger girl to accept a baggie of cocaine.
He shook himself and spun from the window only to be faced with Gracie, who had abandoned her math drills and was tending her fingernails.
He crossed the space in two strides and snatched the nail file from her. Shock rippled across her features.
“No wonder you had a difficult time in traditional school settings. You’re extremely gifted but your nails are apparently more important!” he snapped.
“I’m sorry, Will. I did the first two sets and…well, trig is hard on your cuticles.”
Will paced to his desk and dropped the file into the wastebasket. She lifted her pencil but rather than begin the third set of problems, studied him while chewing the eraser.
His eyes blurred as he stared back, and he saw the dark purple section of Evangeline’s pixie-short hair in his mind’s eye. Deep in his soul he knew she was shaking too. If he waited too long to claim her she’d go insane. Did he want that?
Gracie snapped her fingers before his face. “Will! What is going on?”
He focused on her, though his mind still lived far away in the Chicago bookstore where Evangeline worked. He could smell the paper and ink of new books and hear the low hum of voices. Dear God, he could nearly feel her breath in his veins.
“Will!” Gracie broke again through his Vision.
He emerged with a sigh. “Didn’t the others tell you?”
Her clear, green eyes searched his. “Tell me what?”
“That I’ve received The Calling,” he answered. The instant the words left his lips, he was deluged by more images—of Evangeline’s bare hip facing away from him, of grasping her navel ring and tipping her onto her back. Skimming her taut waist and the gentle swell of her hips with his palms. The Vision of his tongue on her immortal tattoo delivered a shock, and he burned with the need to part her thighs and sink into the soft nest of dark curls while sharing their blood, therefore completing the imprint.
“The Calling!” Gracie exclaimed, her face alive with happiness. “Well, why aren’t you looking for her?”
“Because, Gracie,” he said, bowing his head miserably, “I don’t want her.”
When immortals Will Cochran and Evangeline Mayer are thrown together by a phenomenon known as The Calling, they breech the barriers of a conventional relationship. By sharing their blood and bodies, their minds and souls are also entwined. But Evangeline has been yanked from the arms of her mortal love, Sean Livingston, and the echo of his touch never leaves her.
When she’s kidnapped by a sadistic immortal seeking revenge for the loss of his own mate, Sean is summoned as a means to torture her. Their reunion both titillates and torments her new mate, Will. He and Sean make a pact to share the woman they both love, and find new desires arising in the arms of each other.
To My Reader: The passion felt between two people in love is glorious, but add a third person and experience the breathlessness.
I hope you enjoy the sexy trials of immortals Will and Evangeline and the mortal man they both find irresistible.

Review: First I have to mention that it is very dangerous to just pick a book without reading the synopsis first or even knowing what genre it is from. When I started reading Runes I thought it was a YA book until the scene turned a bit too racy for it to be considered YA. So I looked it up and realized what book I had just picked!
As far as erotic books go Runes has a fairly strong story unlike many erotic books and the author really delves into the minds of her characters. Their struggles and thoughts are much more developed than most erotic fictions I've read.
Will, an immortal saves the life of his sisters girlfriend from an overdose by "turning her". It isn't until afterward that he discovers that they are bonded and "called" as soul mates. If they don't come together the pain they feel will drive them insane.
While Will fights the "calling" Evangaline, who doesn't know she is immortal, fears the voices in her head are her going insane not Will trying to calm her down. Not wanting to scare her sister she turns to Sean a mortal friend of hers who offers her a place to stay. While there they form a bond of their own, that borders on obsessive.
So now Evangaline is torn between her mortal love and her immortal bond. After Evangaline is kidnapped Will and Sean find themselves in the awkward situation of trying to work together to save the woman they both love.
In between all the action are long graphic sex scenes including menage a trois, and male on male scenes. If this is offensive to you I would avoid this book. All in all I would say one of the better erotic fictions I've read.

Evangeline, torn by family issues, has lived life on the edge. Toying with things that endanger her has taken her far from her songwriting roots. When she wakes up on the floor of her bathroom with the strange tattoo of runes running from her face to her shoulder, she decides it is time for a change. But then the images of the man her sister once dated began to graphically haunt her every waking moment.
Will is an Immortal who saved Evangeline from her own self destructive nature by bringing her into immortality. When he then feels her “calling” to him, he realizes that the woman he saved is entwined with his very soul and mind. Ignoring her “call” is driving him mad, but he is able to try to wait it out until, through their link, he feels the hands of another on her body.
Sean loves Evangaline and his feelings about her are not conflicted at all. When he slides his hands across her skin, across the strange tattoos that now trace her face, sometimes it seems as if she thinks of another. When an Immortal kidnapps her, he is forced to deal with a man claiming to be her soulmate as well as a monster trying to steal her. Will their love survive?
Desires are born, discovered and explored in this fresh look at immortality. From the erotic tattoos that mark them immortal to the fiery passion between Evangeline and each of the two men, this story managed to keep the pages flipping in rapid succession. When the three characters finally get their hands on each other, the bonfire rages out of control and this erotic tale of a triangle of phenomenal lovers transforms into truly an exceptional read.
Love can overcome even the darkest of pasts, if you allow it close enough to your heart. When that love comes in the form of two passionate men, all the better.
SUMMARY: (blurb taken from publisher’s site) When immortals Will Cochran and Evangeline Mayer are thrown together by a phenomenon known as The Calling, they breech the barriers of a conventional relationship.
FIRST LINE: When Will Cochran backed away from the woman on the bathroom floor, they were both bleeding.
PLOT: I love a strong plot that delivers conflict from the first sentence. I love a strong plot that delivers a good cliff hanger at the end of each chapter making me begrudge the moment I have to set the book aside. I love a strong plot that has me wondering at odd hours of the day and night what will become of the characters. What will their fate be. I found all of that in this book. Runes is thick with conflict and back story that brought a unique story to the page. The one plot thread I would have liked explained in more detail was Sean's tattoo. However, from my understanding we will get the answers in the following books of the series, so I will have to practice patience until then!
SETTING: The story begins in Chicago and then moves to the cold regions of Vermont and finally ending in the smoldering jungles of South America.
WRITING: Ms. Petrova's writing style was smooth throughout the entire book. She added great detail to the action scenes and love scenes in equal proportions. There was a part of Evangeline's past that struck a soft spot with me. A past that needed a finesse as well as grit added to it for that certain plot thread to work. Her style coupled with her strong plot allowed this it to work well with the story.
CHARACTERS: In Runes you get to see the inner workings of all three main characters. At first I was not drawn towards the heroine and felt no connection with her or her self destructing behavior. That lasted all of eleven pages. When Evangeline actually comes onto the page, and you get that in depth view of her reasoning, everything makes sense. It makes you wonder how you would have responded if you were placed in her situation. If you would have survived as long as she did.
In the act of unknowingly saving his immortal Mate's life, Will shows the type of man he is. Upon opening Runes you are immediately inside his head and you get the full view of what it is like to be immortal and alone.
When Evangeline allows Sean close to her heart he proves to be a man worthy of her love by protecting her as she should have been since childhood. His personality and charisma is hot and matches well with both Will's and Evangeline's. It was really exciting to watch the three come together and form a relationship that might not have lasted if the men would have allowed jealousy and pride to over power them. The one thing I would have liked to see is a bit more detail about the hero's pasts.
LAST THOUGHTS: Runes touched me with all the emotions and 'real' life problems. I like to read about heroines that could be everyday people I might be friends with. Because of her, I can see all the achievements in my own life and just how strong I have become. I believe a lot of woman will form a connection with Evangeline on one level or another. I really recommend this book to anyone that likes to read stories of strength and love that overcome some of the darkest pasts.
