Description:

The year is 1840. On the run after being caught in a scandalous incident, scullery maid Sarah Bailey must find refuge before her vengeful former mistress has her killed. When she stumbles upon a blacksmith’s shop in need of an apprentice in West Boylston, Massachusetts, she applies for the position.

Viktor is a brawny, reclusive blacksmith who creates strange clockwork and steam-powered devices. The gruff man makes it clear that Sarah’s plight is no concern of his, but ghosts from his past dictate otherwise. Viktor agrees to protect the spunky maid, but only until her trail of henchmen runs cold.

Sarah quickly discovers that the fire of this blacksmith’s forge runs volcanic hot. Unable to resist one another, she and Viktor begin a lust-filled affair. But how long will their idyllic arrangement last before Sarah’s former mistress destroys it?

Reader Alert!

Before reading, make sure you have enough protection—fire protection, that is! The heat running through the blood of this blacksmith is volcanic hot! Sarah and Viktor are the very definition of lusty, primal sex!

To My Readers:

The Blacksmith’s Lover will transport you to a wondrous place filled with unconventional characters, amazing (and eerie!) clockwork devices, and passionate love. Through the eyes of the plucky scullery maid heroine, you’ll discover the mysterious forge of a rugged, fiery-tempered blacksmith who is all Alpha. Once the heroine shows him the transforming power of love, he musters every weapon in his arsenal to protect her.

As a direct result of mentioning Russian dudes on Twitter, I got a recommendation for a second book with a hottie hero. The Blacksmith's Lover by Heather Massey. Talk about different! This book was a delightful, quirky discovery. It is set in the 19th century, and it's about a secretive, super sexy Russian blacksmith with a very heavy accent (hot!), who takes in a scullery maid on-the-run. She is hiding from her vindictive former employers, and Viktor chops off her hair and disguises her as his apprentice.

This book was a totally refreshing, outside-of-the-box take on steampunk romance. Massey's voice is wonderful, and worked perfectly for this tale. The 19th century setting comes alive in this story, and the characters and their relationship were earthy, primitive and sometimes rough around the edges. Sex is not glamorized or romanticized. We get real sounds and real smells during the sex scenes--no rose-scented hair or sandalwood fragrance. Just a big, sweaty, hot, hairy Russian blacksmith...uh...*Penny slaps her own self again* I'm back!

The steampunk climax was fantastic! Massey somehow manages to mix romance, sex and steampunk inventions into one entertaining novella. This is definitely not a traditional romance, but I loved the unique aspect of the story and I will be reading more by this author. I love it when writers take a chance in our genre.

Review: The Blacksmith’s Lover by Heather Massey

"Heather Massey unfolds a love story with countless twists that will keep the reader guessing."

In the year 1840, indentured servants have no rights.  Sarah Bailey is a maid and tries hard to avoid attracting any attention from the master of the house.  Unfortunately he notices her and begins to sexually assault her.  Sarah knows there is nothing she can do to stop him, so she submits to him.  His wife catches them, assuming that Sarah is a willing participant.  She swears to kill Sarah.  Sarah escapes with only the clothes on her back.  After wandering in the cold, wet Massachusetts night, Sarah, hungry and desperate, sees a sign outside a blacksmith’s shop.  The blacksmith needs an apprentice.  Sarah decides to apply for the job.  Can she convince him that a woman can do the work of a blacksmith?

Viktor is looking toward the future.  With no woman or children in his future, Viktor wants an apprentice so he can pass on everything he knows.  In addition to being an accomplished blacksmith, Viktor makes fantastic mechanical devices that run on steam in his spare time.  A young woman comes to Viktor to apply for the apprentice job but he turns her away.  Her pitiful appearance and his soft heart make him take Sarah into his home in spite of his better judgment.  Viktor knows nothing about women, but Sarah stirs him.  He wants more from Sarah than work but does not know how to go about getting it.  When Sarah finally takes matters into her own hands and seduces Viktor, he submits happily to her desires.  Sarah and Viktor live together peacefully until her former mistress sends mercenaries to kidnap her and bring her back for punishment.  Can Viktor keep Sarah safe?

Heather Massey unfolds a love story with countless twists that will keep the reader guessing.  Sarah just wants a peaceful life and she thought she had it when she was a maid.  One misunderstanding and it all became dust.  Viktor is the answer to her prayers.  Not only does he offer her the chance to work, but he is handsome and big enough to protect her.  A war breaks out between the army of mercenaries sent by her former mistress and Viktor.  He is not going to give up Sarah.  Sarah soon learns that Viktor’s steam powered toys are weapons when Victor arms them and releases them against the invading army.  Ms. Massey constructs an epic battle at the end of the book that will keep the reader breathless.  Will Viktor win the day for the woman he loves or will her former mistress have her revenge?
